Reduce, Relax and Rewild

Reduce, Relax and Rewild

How rethinking your lawn will save you time, money and the environment:

Reduce the use of chemicals

Reduce, Relax and RewildThe use of pesticides is extremely detrimental to wildlife and biodiversity. Wide scale use of glyphosate can constitute major environmental and health problems.

Reducing the use of chemicals such as glyphosate as a method of ‘weed’ control will provide positive impacts including; healthier population of invertebrates, birds and mammals, this includes vital pollinator insects such as bees. When glyphosate is used on hard standing areas it can run off into drains and contaminate water. Studies have even found residues of glyphosate in up to 80% of humans!

Relax your mowing schedule

‘No Mow May’ has grown in popularity over the last few years, however it isn’t just the month of May we should be reducing our mowing. Trying to limit how much you mow your lawn throughout summer, will allow so many more wildflower to thrive and provide vital food source for pollinators. Mowing less and allowing the lawn to grow a little bit longer in between cuts, will save you time and money. It will also reduce fumes from petrol mowers.

Rewild areas of your lawn

Another great way to reduce mowing within your garden, is to completely rewild certain areas. Look at your garden and think what areas could you give over to nature. Get creative with layouts, mowing paths through wilder areas or a mowed circle for playing in surrounded by rich biodiverse grassland. This approach isn’t just limited to larger gardens, even within small garden, you can leave the edges of lawn to grow long, even a small strip of wild longer grass will help boost biodiversity.
